It is still possible to buy a new car for a million rubles in 2021, but one cannot expect that it will be a SUV of a prestigious brand and in a good configuration. Chinese or Duster with its Nissan clones - that's the whole choice. Another thing is the secondary market, where there is an opportunity to purchase a decent and well-equipped crossover. The situation in this market is not changing as dynamically as it might seem, but the range of prices is really large, and it is better to focus on the weighted average offers, which will be discussed in our rating.

Toyota RAV4

For a million rubles, you can buy a third-generation SUV. These cars were produced between 2005 and 2014, but most of the offerings are 2010-2011 crossovers. That is, you have the opportunity to purchase a ten-year SUV with a range of 100-200 thousand kilometers. For this model and this generation, given the exceptional reliability of the RAV4, this is not a deadline. Note that the SUV is second only to the Camry and Corolla sedans in terms of the number of used cars for sale. Considering that 10 years ago the popularity of crossovers was much lower, this fact is very significant.

In most cases, you will get a SUV with a two-liter engine with a capacity of 158 horsepower, if you get a 170-horsepower 2.4-liter engine, you can also safely take it, both power units are considered extremely reliable. You will need to regularly change the engine oil and, occasionally, the drive belt (every 100 thousand kilometers), as well as the pump and timing belt (every 150 thousand kilometers).

The suspension is also considered reliable, but given the quality of Russian roads, get ready for the fact that after 80-100 thousand kilometers you will have to change the silent blocks (especially the front), steering rack, stabilizer bushings. Often wheel bearings fly, less often front shock absorbers.

For a million rubles, most of the offers of used SUVs are CR-V of the third generation, produced during 2006-2011. That is, it will be a car produced in 2011 (after restyling produced in 2010). Most of the proposals are crossovers of 2008-2010 with mileage in the region of 150-200 thousand kilometers.

They were equipped with a two-liter petrol engine with a capacity of 150 horsepower or a 2.4-liter 166-horsepower engine. In general, these units are considered quite reliable. If there is a choice between a manual transmission and an automatic transmission, give preference to the latter - “a manual transmission may have problems with the clutch, synchronizers often fail. A machine is more reliable with proper care, but try to avoid towing the crossover if it breaks down along the way.

When choosing a used Honda CR-V SUV, pay attention to the condition of the catalyst and lambda probe, they are usually at the dying stage, and replacing these parts is an expensive procedure.

As for the engine, the recommendations here are standard - change the oil (always of high quality) every 8-10 thousand kilometers, and then you can leave at least another 100 thousand.

Volkswagen tiguan

Oddly enough, the German SUV can be purchased quite "young", 2010-2013 year of release. This will be the first generation, but you should not be very upset - currently a second generation car is being produced. It is also realistic to take a car with a range of up to 150 thousand kilometers, and the younger it is, the lower the numbers on the speedometer will be.

Most of the proposals are SUVs equipped with a two-liter gasoline engine with a capacity of 170 horsepower, and it is considered quite reliable, in contrast to the 1.4-liter engine, which was designed with serious design mistakes, as a result of which, due to overheating, the piston group does not serve enough long. There is also a two-liter 140-horsepower diesel engine, which is also not bad, but it is relatively rare.

The number of transmissions includes a manual transmission, a robot, and an automatic. Note that the average resource of a DSG robot is about 100 thousand kilometers, so choose an SUV with any other box, but not a robot.

As for the equipment, usually the younger the car, the better, richer and more modern equipment. After restyling, the Volkswagen Tiguan has climate control (dual-zone), 4 airbags, electric mirrors, a light / rain sensor, alloy wheels, a parking assistant - in a word, a gentleman's set. One of the few crossovers that can be purchased on the secondary market in the current (second) generation, produced since 2006 and after restyling in 2010. It is these copies of 2013-2014 that we should be interested in, since they are presented on the market in sufficient quantities.

Two gasoline engines were installed on these crossovers: a two-liter with 140 horsepower and a 2.4-liter 169-horsepower. There are also two transmissions: a manual transmission and an automatic transmission.

The main advantage of the model is its excellent off-road characteristics, which is not surprising: the predecessor was a real SUV with a frame body and non-switchable all-wheel drive. The second Grand Vitara also has a full-fledged 4x4 drive with the ability to forcibly lock the center differential, but it is the transfer case that is the weak link. You should definitely check it for oil leaks and at the same time - how clearly the modes switch.

The suspension, although resource-intensive, is also not eternal, it is better to check when buying whether the shock absorbers and the steering rack are leaking. Ball joints, front stabilizer bushings, silent blocks do not go long.

If you need a car with improved off-road characteristics for 1,000,000 rubles, the best choice is a used SUV Suzuki Grand Vitara, but keep in mind that it has a stiff suspension, so you should not rely on comfortable conditions when driving on country roads.

Mazda CX-5

The production of the first generation cars was curtailed in 2017, which means that you can become the owner of a fairly young Japanese SUV of the 2012-2013 model. It is these models that prevail in the secondary market, although there are older cars, and sometimes they slip by younger ones, but they are quickly sold out.

Most often, there are specimens equipped with a two-liter engine with a capacity of 150 horsepower, the second engine is a 2.2-liter 175-horsepower diesel unit. Both motors are considered reliable and durable. There are no complaints about the boxes, mechanical and automatic.

The car is equipped with an i-stop system designed to save fuel - during short stops, it turns off the engine on its own, which has a bad effect on the condition of the drive belts, so check them carefully when buying.

During a test drive, pay attention to knocking in the front, on the car's roll when cornering - this may be evidence of wear of the front stabilizer struts, which is "partial" to bad roads and dashing drivers.

The manual transmission is problem-free, but the automatic transmission can fail, so when buying it is better to check if some gears are missing, if there are any jolts when switching - if so, then it is better not to take such a SUV, replacing the automatic transmission will cost you dearly.

Kia sportage

If you want to buy a fairly fresh SUV worth up to 1,000,000 rubles with mileage, we advise you to pay attention to this Korean. Most of the offers in the specified price range are copies of 2012-2015 years of release with a real mileage of 100-150 thousand kilometers. We have already noted that the younger the crossover, the better equipped it is. So you have the opportunity to purchase a car with premium features - leather interior, separate climate control, multifunction steering wheel, cruise control, multimedia system with a touch screen - in a word, a complete set with “full stuffing”.

The car was equipped with a reliable two-liter 150-horsepower engine, which relied on an automatic transmission. Both units are considered to be very reliable, provided they are properly cared for. For the suspension of this SUV, one problem is characteristic: after 20 thousand kilometers, the rear springs sag noticeably, there are comments to the front stabilizer struts and shock absorbers, their condition should be checked before buying.

Another disease of the third generation Kia Sportage is a weak windshield - in winter, when the SUV warms up, it often cracks at the place where the wiper blades fit.

Nissan x-trail

The start of sales of the second generation Nissan X-Trail fell on 2007, in 2014 the next generation SUV was released. Although these SUVs were supplied to Russia with three engine options (a 141-horsepower two-liter gasoline engine, its more powerful 169-horsepower 2.5-liter counterpart and a two-liter 150-horsepower turbodiesel), the overwhelming majority of proposals are crossovers with a junior power unit, which it was standard equipped with a variator and, optionally, with an automatic transmission. It is quite possible to find a car with a range of 100 thousand kilometers or even a five-digit speedometer.

The equipment promises to be not premium, but sufficient: 4 airbags, 4 power windows, climate control, rear parking sensors, a cooled glove compartment, electrically adjustable exterior mirrors, leather interior and a panoramic roof (for top trim levels).

Note that two-liter engines are worse than more powerful engines, their gasket quickly dries up and oil begins to leak, every 100 thousand kilometers it is necessary to adjust the valves, the timing chain runs on average 120,000 kilometers.

Land rover freelander

It must be said that the second generation Freelander, mass production of which took place in 2006, turned out to be much more reliable than the first, and it is these used SUVs that fall into the range of up to 1,000,000 rubles. The reason for this is known: the second generation car was developed with the active participation of specialists from Ford, and even the components are for the most part Ford.

One way or another, the 2010-2012 Freelander turned out to be quite good, with excellent off-road characteristics (clearance - 21 cm), comfortable, easy to control, with a spacious trunk (750 liters) and a spacious interior. They were equipped with reliable and powerful gasoline (two-liter 140-horsepower and 3.2-liter 233-horsepower) and diesel (2.2-liter 150/190 horsepower) engines, a manual transmission and an automatic transmission.

But, alas, the crossover is not very adapted to subzero temperatures - on diesel versions with an automatic transmission, it is better to immediately replace the transmission oil with a more liquid one, otherwise problems with the torque converter are possible. They are afraid of severe frosts and standard silent blocks, it is also advisable to replace them with polyurethane ones, which still need to be looked for. The SUV radiator tends to quickly become clogged with dirt, it must be cleaned at least annually to avoid overheating of the engine.

The same applies to the rear parking sensors - the sensors are located in a place where they are not protected from dirt and moisture. The SUV has many other design flaws, but in general it is a powerful and reliable car.

Nissan Qashqai

With this SUV, the situation is ambiguous - for a million rubles, you can buy a car of the first generation (mainly in 2013 with mileage of up to 100 thousand kilometers), and the second, 2014-2015, and also with relatively low mileage.

This is not to say that the cars are very different, but the range of motors they have is not the same. However, in Russia both options were successful. Of course, it is better to take a younger crossover, it was equipped with three powertrain options - a 1.2-liter 115-horsepower engine, a two-liter 140-horsepower engine and a 1.3-liter diesel engine with 130 horsepower. From transmissions, only a variator and a manual gearbox are available, the drive can be full or front.

On the market, for the most part, there are copies with a two-liter engine, which turned out to be durable, provided that the oil is changed in time, except for the candles, they do not last long.

Among other features of the crossover are frequent failures of the air conditioner on the factory firmware. If you want an all-wheel drive option, get a CVT-only SUV, which is less reliable than a manual transmission. It is important here not to overheat the clutch and, of course, adhere to the oil change regulations.

Hyundai ix35

Another representative of the Korean car industry closes our top 10 used SUVs for 1,000,000 rubles. Despite the unprepossessing appearance, the crossover is quite popular in Russia. You may well become the owner of a 5-6-year-old car, well-equipped, although most of the proposals are SUVs of 2012-2013 years of release.

The overwhelming majority of proposals are crossovers with a two-liter 150-horsepower gasoline engine, although diesel engines of the same volume, boosted to 136/183 horsepower, were also supplied to Russia. Automatic and manual transmissions are available among transmissions, both are reasonably reliable.

Now about the typical diseases of the model. The steering rack is frankly weak, and taking into account the quality of our roads, it serves half the time. The automatic transmission is generally good, but does not like overheating very much. The weak point of the all-wheel drive - the splines between the transfer case and the transmission - it turns out that the lubricant was not put there at the factory. There are problem areas in the suspension, the paintwork is not of high quality, the noise insulation of the crossover is mediocre. In a word, the car is not perfect, but for several years it can still serve the new owner.

Choosing a decent used SUV is not an easy task, given that the number of available models exceeds the number of new car models. Here it is important to correctly prioritize and carefully study the strengths and weaknesses of the crossovers you like, and then your choice will not upset you. At least in the short term.
