The second-generation mid-size SUV celebrated its world premiere in early October 2018 on the stage of the Paris International Auto Show (and "for Europe" - without the word Trumpchi in the name, which is very much in tune with the name of American President Donald Trump), and already at the end of the same month they started its sales in the Chinese market.
Compared to its predecessor, the crossover has become much more attractive in appearance, received an "advanced" interior, "armed" exclusively with turbocharged engines and acquired modernized equipment, but at the same time, contrary to modern trends, it has slightly "shrunk" in size.
Exterior
Externally, the "second" GAC Trumpchi GS5 boasts an attractive, stylish, modern and harmonious design, in which there are no obvious borrowings. In front, the car shows a huge chrome "shield" of the radiator grille, merging together with frowned headlights, and a sculpted bumper, and its rear is crowned with elegant lanterns, a neat trunk lid and a "puffy" bumper with fake trapezoidal tailpipes.
In profile, the crossover looks balanced, quite solid and moderately dynamic - a long hood, a “floating” roof with sloping outlines, expressive “folds” on the sidewalls and large “cutouts” of wheel arches, into which “rollers” up to 19 inches fit.
Size and weight
In terms of its dimensions, the GAC Trumpchi GS5 of the second generation is a representative of the mid-size category: its length is 4695 mm, of which 2710 mm is the distance between the wheelsets of the front and rear axles, and the width and height are 1885 mm and 1700 mm, respectively.
In running order, the SUV weighs from 1517 to 1582 kg, depending on the modification.
Interior
The interior of the second generation GAC Trumpchi GS5 evokes extremely positive emotions - it looks really nice, interesting and modern, in no way inferior to Japanese or Korean "classmates". A completely virtual "toolbox" with a 12.3-inch screen, a multifunctional steering wheel with a raised rim, a kind of center console carrying a 10.1-inch touchscreen of the multimedia center and stylish keys for controlling secondary functions - inside the car completely and completely corresponds to the current fashion trends. True, in the basic versions, everything is much simpler - an analog instrument cluster with a 3.5-inch display and multimedia with an 8-inch display.
The interior of a mid-size crossover is able to accommodate the driver and four of his companions without any problems. In the front part there are ergonomic seats with a well-defined side profile, wide adjustment ranges (in the "top" trim levels - with an electric drive) and heating. On the second row, you can see a comfortable sofa and an almost flat floor, but there are a minimum of additional amenities: adjustment of the backrest angle, a folding center armrest and ventilation deflectors.
The all-terrain vehicle has a cargo compartment of the correct shape with smooth walls and a wide opening, the volume of which in the normal state is about 500 liters (exact figures are not reported). The back of the "gallery", consisting of two asymmetric sections, when folded significantly increases the capacity of the trunk, but forms a noticeable step. In the niche under the raised floor there is a spare wheel and tools.
Specifications
In the Russian market, the second-generation GAC GS5 is offered with one gasoline engine - a 1.5-liter inline-four with a turbocharger, distributed injection, a 16-valve DOHC timing belt and a variable valve timing system that develops 137 horsepower at 5000 rpm and 216 Nm of torque at 1450-4250 rpm.
By default, the motor is mated with a 6-speed "mechanics" and a front-wheel drive transmission, but as an option it is entitled to a 6-band hydromechanical "automatic" (but there is no all-wheel drive here under any circumstances).
It is worth noting that in China, the car is equipped with a 1.5-liter turbo engine with direct injection, generating either 152 hp. and 235 Nm, or 169 hp. and 265 Nm.
Design features
The second "edition" of the GAC Trumpchi GS5 is built on a "front-wheel drive" platform with a transverse engine and a load-bearing structure of the body, which is widely used in the power structure of high-strength grades of steel.
On both axles of the car, independent suspensions with hydraulic shock absorbers, steel springs and transverse stabilizers are used: in the front - of the MacPherson type, in the rear - a multi-link.
Nominally, the crossover is equipped with a rack-and-pinion steering mechanism with an integrated electric control amplifier. All wheels of the five-door are equipped with disc brakes (ventilated on the front axle), complemented by various electronic "gadgets".
Options and prices
On the Russian market, the "second" GAC GS5 is offered in four trim levels to choose from - Comfort, Elite, Luxe and Premium (moreover, the "mechanics" is available only in the "base").
A crossover in the initial version with 6MKPP costs a minimum of 1,499,900 rubles, while for 6АКПП you will have to pay another 120,000 rubles.
By default, it is equipped with: two airbags, ABS, ESP, power sunroof, 17-inch alloy wheels, air conditioning, four power windows, heated and power mirrors, a media center with an 8-inch screen, a six-speaker audio system and other modern options.
For the Elite version, dealers ask from 1,659,900 rubles, the Luxe package cannot be purchased for less than 1,749,900 rubles, and the "top" modification will cost from 1,849,900 rubles.
The most "sophisticated" car has to its credit: six airbags, dual-zone climate control, leather interior trim, 18-inch wheels, front and rear parking sensors, full LED optics, a panoramic sunroof, electrically adjustable and heated front seats, monitoring of the blind zones, electric boot lid, keyless entry and engine start, as well as other "chips".
