Subaru Ascent is a four-wheel drive SUV of the mid-size category (at least by American standards) with a seven- or eight-seat cabin layout, which is the "commander-in-chief" in the model range of the Japanese automaker ... Its main target audience is family people leading an active lifestyle and practicing outings to nature who need a reliable and functional car ...

The full-scale premiere of an SUV designed specifically for the North American market (as noted by the company itself) took place at the end of November 2017 - at the Los Angeles auto show (however, it was first shown to a wide audience in April - at the New York show, as the same name concept).

Ascent, the largest Subaru ever made, is designed to compete with the likes of the Toyota Highlander, Mazda CX-9 and Ford Explorer.

The exterior of the mid-size SUV is subordinated to a concept called "Dynamic & Solid" - and indeed, the car looks attractive, monumental and balanced, but without any hint of heaviness.

The moderately aggressive front end of the five-door is decorated with stylish headlights of a "complex" shape, a hexagonal "shield" of the radiator grille and a massive bumper, and its tightly knocked down stern is crowned with large lanterns connected by a chrome bar and a neat bumper with a pair of "trunks" of the exhaust system.

In profile, the crossover is distinguished by solid and harmonious outlines with "inflated" wheel arches and embossed "folds" on the sidewalls, a bit of dynamism in which the smoothly sloping roof and the window sill line rising to the rear are exalted.

In terms of its dimensions, the Subaru Ascent is a very large SUV, but formally it is still mid-size: it stretches 4998 mm in length, reaches 1930 mm in width, and does not exceed 1819 mm in height. The distance between the wheelsets of the five-door has a 2890 mm gap, and under the bottom it has a 220 mm ground clearance.

In addition, the vehicle is capable of towing trailers weighing up to 2268 kg.

Inside, the car meets the riders with a beautiful and modern design, well-thought-out ergonomics and high-quality assembly and finishing materials.

Behind the three-spoke multi-steering wheel is an exemplary "toolbox" with two dial gauges and a color screen between them, and the prominent center console flaunts the 6.5- or 8-inch display (depending on the configuration) of the infotainment complex and laconic but stylish control units for "music" and "microclimate".

As standard, Subaru Ascent is equipped with comfortably profiled seats with well-developed lateral bolsters, optimal cushion length and wide adjustment ranges, as well as a three-seater "gallery", which can accommodate even adult passengers on short trips (though not with the maximum level of comfort).

On the second row, either a full-fledged sofa with welcoming shapes, or two separate "captain's" seats with armrests can be installed.

Even with all the seats occupied, the crossover does not have a nominal trunk - its volume is 555 liters (according to the SAE method - when loaded under the roof).

The two rear rows of seats fold down into an almost flat area, which increases the headroom to an impressive 2,055 liters.

Under the hood of the Subaru Ascent, a non-alternative gasoline engine is installed - this is a four-cylinder "boxer" of the FA family with a displacement of 2.4 liters with a twin-scroll twin-scroll turbocharger, an intercooler, direct fuel injection, a variable valve timing system and a constant piston stroke, developing 260 horsepower at 5600 rpm / minute and 376 Nm of torque at 2000-4800 rpm.

In the "base" the crossover is equipped with a wedge-chain variator Lineartronic, which has a mode of simulating eight gears and paddle shifters, and a proprietary all-wheel drive transmission Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive.

It is not yet known how dynamic, fast and “gluttonous” the car is, but it is stated that on one fully filled tank (the volume of which is 73 liters), it is able to overcome more than 800 km of track (i.e., it is assumed that the consumption is 10 ~ 11 liters per 100 km paths).

Subaru Ascent is based on a modular platform SPG (Subaru Global Platform) with a longitudinally oriented power plant and a monocoque body, the structure of which is largely made of high-strength steel grades.

On both axles of the SUV, independent suspensions are used: in the front - of the MacPherson type, in the rear - a multi-link system (both there and there - with anti-roll bars, passive shock absorbers and steel springs).

On the four wheels of the five-door there are disc brakes (ventilated on the front axle), supplemented by ABS, EBD and other modern "gadgets", and its rack and pinion steering complex is equipped with an electric power steering.

By default, the car is equipped with an electronic X-Mode system that helps when driving off-road, as well as Active Torque Vectoring technology, which comes into play on asphalt - it is able to brake the inner front wheel in bends, adding traction to the outer wheel and thereby helping to "screw »Turn the car.

In the US, Subaru Ascent sales started in the summer of 2018 in four trim levels - Base, Premium, Limited and Touring (priced from ~ $ 32,000 for the basic configuration, up to ~ $ 54,000 for maximum speed) ...

  • "By default" the car is equipped with: seven airbags, three-zone "climate", 18-inch aluminum wheels, four USB ports, adaptive cruise, ABS, ESP, heated front seats, automatic braking and tracking systems, a multimedia complex with 6.5-inch screen and other equipment.

  • "Top" modification boasts: nine airbags, LED headlights, panoramic cameras, electric and ventilated front seats, heated second row, 20-inch wheels, premium "music" with 14 columns, glass roof, 8-inch multimedia system screen and other "chips".
