The second generation of the Cherokee SUV with the designation "XJ" was released in 1983 - it not only became much more compact, but also noticeably changed in terms of design.

In 1997, the car underwent a small update, which affected the exterior and interior, after which it remained unchanged on the assembly line until 2001.

The "second" Jeep Cherokee is a compact SUV, available in body styles with three or five doors. Depending on the modification, the length of the "American" is from 4254 to 4322 mm, the width is from 1763 to 1790 mm, and the height is from 1621 to 1695 mm. The size of the wheelbase of the car is allocated from 2575 to 2678 mm, the ground clearance is the same in all versions - 220 mm. When loaded, this "Cherokee" weighs from 1305 to 1515 kg.

A wide range of powertrains were installed on the second generation Cherokee.

  • The petrol lineup includes 2.5-liter inline-fours producing from 118 to 130 horsepower and 198 to 202 Nm of torque, and a 4.0-liter V6, whose output varies from 173 to 190 “horses” and from 290 to 305 Nm of thrust.
  • Turbodiesels with a volume of 2.1-2.5 liters were also available, producing from 86 to 115 forces and from 184 to 280 Nm.

There are four gearboxes - 4- or 5-speed "mechanics", 3- or 4-band "automatic".

The SUV was equipped with both rear and all-wheel drive with an center differential (Selec-Trac) or without it (Command Trac).

The 2nd generation SUV has a monocoque body type with an independent spring suspension on the front axle and a dependent spring arrangement in the rear axle structure.

Disc brakes are mounted on the front of the car, and drum devices on the back. The steering is aggregated with a hydraulic booster.

Among the advantages of the "second" Jeep Cherokee are such parameters as: low price, affordable service, good maintainability, high level of cross-country ability, high-torque engines and stable behavior on the road.
Not without its drawbacks - stiff suspension, high fuel consumption, weak brakes, poor handling and poor front lighting.
