Reviews, comparisons & tips for motorists

The German automaker never ceases to amaze: experiments with crossovers, it seems, have not yet reached the final stage, and the huge Teramont family crossover is a vivid confirmation of this. Now it is he who fights with the Touareg for the right to be called the flagship SUV. With a length of more than 5 meters, the car costs less than the opponent. Let's see, what's the trick here?

Technical features of the models

The Touareg, produced since 2002, has already grown to the third generation, while the Teramont is a new product that appeared on the market in 2016, and in Russia two years later.

Exterior

The third generation Touareg looks at the same time strict and pretty, brutal and quite modern, and from all angles. From the front, the SUV looks solid and even somewhat arrogant. This is facilitated by complex head optics, fully LED, as well as a massive chrome grille with the same huge bumper. The stern looks more elegant and even a little refined thanks to the inflated bumper and the refined shape of the lanterns.

In the profile projection, there can be no complaints about the Touareg silhouette either: everything here looks proportional and organic, from the embossed wheel arches to the gently sloping roofline.

Volkswagen Touareg in gray

Teramont's appearance is somewhat controversial. At the front, it is a typical crossover that meets the new corporate standards with massive cross-members of the bumper, air intake and radiator grill, vaguely reminiscent of the enlarged Duster. At the back, thanks to the faceted shape of the lanterns, the SUV looks like the latest generation Grand Cherokee, and the profile view is generally more reminiscent of a classic station wagon than an SUV.

If we compare the appearance of Volkswagen Teramont and Touareg, then from the point of view of adherents of classical proportions, preference should be given to the latter. But lovers of novelty, most likely, will stop at the first option.

Salon and trunk

The interior of the Touareg looks beautiful, modern and even prestigious - an attempt to make a mid-size crossover that claims to a higher rank affects. Two huge displays, on the central panel and "tidy", form a single information space in the spirit of the times. But this is in the top-end modifications, in the initial ones everything looks more casual and familiar. But in any case, from the ergonomics side, there can be no complaints about the designers. And the quality of the materials used is at a height, corresponding to the premium level.

The 810-liter cargo bay is the pride of the model: where else can you find a crossover with such capacity for loading luggage?

The Teramont has a controversial interior compared to the Touareg. On the one hand, it is very spacious, even if we take into account the seven-seater layout - even in the third row, an adult passenger of average build will not feel cramped.

On the other hand, the Germans clearly decided to save money on finishing materials. Compared to the opponent, they look much cheaper. 580 liters of luggage compartment for a seven-seater car is much better, and if you use all its capabilities, you get a real van with the ability to load 2,700 liters of luggage. By the way, you can choose the option with two seats in the second row with a passage to the third, just like a minibus.

Engines and transmissions

The range of Volkswagen Touareg engines includes three motors:

  • base 2.0-liter 249-horsepower turbocharged;
  • 3.0-liter turbodiesel of the same power;
  • 3.0-liter, 340-horsepower turbocharged petrol engine.

The transmission here is uncontested - an eight-band automatic. A mechanism based on a multi-plate clutch is used as an all-wheel drive.

Teramont has the same number of power units:

  • the base is a 2.0-liter 220-horsepower turbocharged engine;
  • an intermediate version - a 3.6-liter 249-horsepower naturally aspirated engine;
  • the top unit is a 3.6-liter, boosted to 280 horsepower.

All motors are paired with the latest Aisin eight-speed automatic. The all-wheel drive here is also based on an intelligent multi-plate clutch that distributes torque depending on road conditions.

Volkswagen Touareg engine

Comparison of the Teramont and Touareg in terms of engines is in favor of the third generation crossover, because both cars are almost the same in weight.

Dynamics, fuel consumption

Power is a proxy, but what about the Volkswagen Touareg vs Teramont competition in terms of speed and economy?

The 249-horsepower diesel Touareg has a maximum speed of 238 km / h and spends 100 km on overcoming. paths in the combined mode of 7.1 liters of diesel fuel. The 340-horsepower engine has the following indicators: 245 km / h and 9.1 liters.

What will Teramont answer?

The 220-horsepower engine spends 8.6 seconds to accelerate to hundreds, its maximum speed is 190 km / h, and the average gas consumption is 9.4 liters. The top 280-horsepower engine has the following indicators: 8.9 / 190 / 10.6.

As we can see, here, too, the comparison is clearly not in favor of the novelty.

Controllability and cross-country ability

On the asphalt, the Volkswagen Touareg demonstrates excellent performance, both in terms of handling and comfort of movement on uneven road surfaces. This is facilitated by active stabilizers, which include electromechanical actuators in their mechanism, as well as a chassis with the ability to automatically steer the rear wheels. At low speeds, they turn in the opposite direction to the front ones, reducing the turning circle, and at high speeds - in the same direction, contributing to stable high-speed cornering.

The off-road potential of the Touareg is also good: 25 degrees of exit / entry angles allow fording depths of up to 49 cm, and when using the optional air suspension, this figure can grow up to 57 cm.

Volkswagen Touareg salon

If you compare the Teramont with an opponent in terms of comfort and handling, the average driver will not notice much of a difference. Despite its large size, the new crossover is characterized by a high smoothness, good and predictable response to steering wheel manipulation. The dense suspension practically does not allow shaking on large potholes, but it cope worse with small unevenness such as a comb, which are transmitted to the steering wheel. The amplitude of rolls in all directions is minimal, off-road capabilities are slightly worse precisely because of the size of the SUV and the purely urban geometry of the overhangs.

Security systems, assistants

The Touareg, even in the basic configuration, is equipped very well (4 airbags, which are supplemented with curtains as the cost increases), the list of active safety systems looks impressive: ABS / ESP / EBC / RDK / HBA / DLA, Lane Assist, parking assistant.

In the top-end version, Terramont is in no way inferior: the same set of airbags and curtains, plus a set of ABS / ESP / EDL / ASR / ICRS, Front Assist and a powertrain torque control system with the ability to adjust it.

What's better? We believe that approximate parity has been achieved here.

Service cost

For a Tiguan with a two-liter 180-horsepower engine, the costs in the first year of operation will amount to 211,000 rubles (OSAGO - 10,982, CASCO - 137,500, fuel - 54,000). Over the five years, the owner will spend about 895 thousand, or 11.95 rubles / km.

Volkswagen Teramont engine

The Teramont with a 3.6-liter 249-horsepower engine has the following performance:

The first year - 103,075 rubles (fuel - 71,550, OSAGO - 10,982, transport tax - 20,543). The five-year operation will cost the owner 511 thousand rubles, the cost of one kilometer (their calculation is 15,000 km / year) will be 6.82 rubles.

Options and prices

On the Russian market, the Touareg is available in four trim levels, all-wheel drive is present in all. The base Respect costs 3.469 million rubles and includes six airbags, leather interior, dual-zone CC, heated / electric driver and passenger seats, heated steering wheel, “multimedia with a 9-inch display and eight speakers, a keyless entry system, LED headlights, 18- inch wheels, parking sensors, navigation and other options.

The top R-Line, equipped with a 3.0-liter diesel 249-horsepower turbo engine, is sold at a price of 4.809 million rubles, with a gasoline 340-horsepower engine - 5.059 million. To the options listed above will be added heated all seats and windshield, an automatic parking system, a fully virtual instrument panel, air suspension, a 15-inch monitor, 19-inch wheels, power steering and tailgate.

Teramont also comes in four four-wheel drive trims. The younger Origin costs 2.95 million rubles and includes 18-inch alloy wheels, full LED headlights, roof rails, 4 airbags and 4 curtain airbags, ABS / ESP / EDL / ASR active safety systems, heated windshield washer nozzles, an audio center with an eight-inch touchscreen display and six speakers, winter package.

The top modification Exclusive, depending on the engine, costs between 3.84-4.0 million rubles. To the options listed above, you can add a panoramic roof with a sunroof, leather upholstery, heated windshield, three-zone climate control, adaptive cruise, parking autopilot and many other goodies.

Which is better: Teramont or Touareg

The main advantage of the Volkswagen Teramont is its size. As a family car, it is the ideal candidate today. In terms of handling and cross-country ability, it is only slightly inferior to the opponent, so for long trips there is no better option.

The Touareg is a proven horse that has been the flagship midsize crossover of the German automaker for many years. However, it remains as such, since in almost all components, except for dimensions, it surpasses its rival. The leadership in the set and characteristics of engines looks especially clear.
