The first generation Renault Kangoo, presented in cargo and passenger versions, celebrated its official premiere in 1997, and its serial production started in 1998.

In 2002, the French showed the world an all-wheel drive version of the car, and in 2003 they subjected it to an update, which affected the appearance and engine palette (several new engines appeared), after which it was produced until 2007 (although in China and Argentina the car is kept on the conveyor until so far).

"Kangu" of the original generation is found in two body versions - a five-door minivan and a four-door van. Regardless of the version, the length of the car is 4035 mm, the width is 1670 mm, and the height does not exceed 1800 mm.

The clearance between the axles and the clearance of the "Frenchman" is 2600 mm and 140 mm, respectively, and its "travel" weight ranges from 1055 to 1375 kg.

Specifications. For the first incarnation of the Renault Kangoo, a wide range of power plants were available.

  • The car was equipped with in-line petrol "fours" with a volume of 1.1-1.6 liters with an 8- or 16-valve timing structure and multi-point power technology, producing 58-100 horsepower and 93-148 Nm of torque.
  • Diesel engines were also offered for it - four-cylinder atmospheric and turbocharged units for 1.5-1.9 liters, generating 65-80 "mares" and 121-185 Nm of ultimate thrust.

In the arsenal of transmissions there is a “manual” box for five gears or a 4-speed “automatic”.

By default, the "Frenchman" had a front-wheel drive transmission, and for the most powerful versions (100-horsepower petrol and 80-horsepower diesel), an automatically connected four-wheel drive with a viscous coupling was provided.

The 1st generation Kangu is based on a front-wheel drive platform with independent MacPherson suspension at the front and a semi-independent torsional transverse beam at the rear. The car uses a rack and pinion steering system with hydraulic power steering.
Its front wheels are ventilated disc brakes, and the rear - drum mechanisms (all versions, without exception, "flaunt" ABS).

The advantages of the "original" Renault Kangoo most often include high practicality, comfortable interior, original appearance, simple and reliable design, unpretentious engines, good carrying capacity and acceptable driving characteristics.
But the car also has disadvantages, namely a stiff suspension, expensive maintenance and poor sound insulation.
